Leaving Fish Lane

Walking through Melbourne, the brick walls are dense with their stories. I don’t know them. The small square at the top of the street emptied of activity doesn’t seem to be for me either. Houses already occupied, gates locked. Warehouses already converted, opportunity already taken. Businesses everywhere, already with a foothold, an audience, a neighbourhood who already loves them.

Why do I care? Because I’m here in Melbourne wondering about the future of Wandering Cooks. Where will it land? Is it possible it could land in a totally different city?

Why am I thinking about moving?

Because… (drumroll please)

our landlord’s finally sold our warehouse to a developer.

And what does this mean? It means that eventually, we’ll need to leave. Don’t panic! It’s always two years away (we have a 2 year notice period on our demolition clause), but it’s no longer a question of if but when.

Two years isn’t so bad, right? But as I walk through Melbourne’s early morning streets, the options darken into the shadows around me. I don’t want options, I want South Brisbane. I want Fish Lane. I want our home. I want this warehouse will all its cracks and character. I want this laneway, which we’ve helped build. I want the future that we took so long to wait for.

Tough luck Ange. It’s time to pull the options out of the shadows and investigate them in the full light of our future.
